Meghan Markle Cancels Red Carpet Gala Appearance Scheduled 9 Days After Queen’s Funeral
After Saturday’s walkabout with Prince William, Kate Middleton, and Prince Harry, Meghan Markle appeared on Tuesday and Wednesday at royal events leading up to the Queen’s state funeral on Sept. 19. But the Duchess of Sussex won’t be sprinting back to the spotlight in America when she and her husband Harry return to California from the U.K.
Hello! reports that Meghan has canceled her red carpet appearance at Variety‘s Power of Women gala on Sept. 28, nine days after the Queen’s funeral. Meghan is honored in the magazine’s upcoming issue alongside Hillary Clinton, Malala, and Oprah Winfrey among others, Hello! wrote.
Meghan’s absence indicates that the duchess will be taking some time to grieve privately after she and the royal family have been under the spotlight during the days of official events honoring the Queen’s loss in the lead-up to her funeral and burial ceremony.
While Meghan hasn’t been photographed out today yet, she has been seen the last two days at royal functions.
Meghan was photographed out on Tuesday evening, arriving with Prince Harry to view the coffin of Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace. She appeared in their car, with her hair down and a smokey eye on.
On Wednesday, she and Harry attended the ceremony marking the coffin’s procession from Buckingham Palace to the Palace of Westminster, where the Queen is lying in state until Monday’s funeral. She curtsied to the Queen and honored the late monarch by wearing the pearl and diamond earrings the Queen gave her in 2018 in honor of their first solo outing together.
Meghan and Harry were both close to the Queen, and named their daughter Lilibet after her. The duchess spoke to Oprah during her March 2021 interview about how the monarch always showed her kindness.
“The Queen, for example, has always been wonderful to me,” Meghan said. “I mean, we had one of our first joint engagements together. She asked me to join her, and I went on the train. And we had breakfast together that morning, and she gave me a beautiful gift, and I just really loved being in her company, and I know we were in the car—yeah, she gave me some beautiful pearl earrings and a matching necklace—and we were in the car going between engagements. And she has a blanket that sits across her, her knees, for warmth and it was chilly and she was like, ‘Meghan, come on,’ and put it over my knees as well.”
