Bears in Space and Akbar Throw a Sultry Labor Day Soiree
This Labor Day Weekend is forecast to be a hot one and no where hotter than behind Silver Lake landmark Akbar, as the legendary queer party Bears in Space brings its wanton wonderland to the venue’s parking lot. It deserves noting that it was rough going for locales like Akbar during the height of COVID-19, but thankfully, this Silver Lake institution (which we’ve deemed best gay bar in this publication more than once) survived. Of course the LGBTQ+ community is now dealing with another health scare (MonkeyPox), but with vaccines available, it is hoped that this virus can stay controlled. Proving that wild dance parties can also promote health and awareness, BIS is welcoming reps from AHF Pharmacy Flagship who will be providing MPV shots on a first come/first serve basis at the bash. Sounds will be provided by Heidi Lawden and Lovefingers, with Bears creators Chris Bowen, Victor Rodriguez and more alongside pop ups in the parking lot including Word of Mouth Truck, LAG Vintage and Horse & Horn. Party inside Akbar too. 4356 Sunset Blvd. Silver Lake; Sun., Sept. 4, 3 p.m.- 2 a.m. More info and tickets here.
Here’s a glimpse at the long-running party via juicy local queen/personality Meatball (who did a live report there four years ago).
